Come by train and bus, or let the ferry bring you across the bay. A day centred on Hesse Street and the harbour works well on foot. The trick is to choose your journey home first, then leave plenty of room for lunch, local stories and whatever catches your eye.

Choose how you arrive
| Starting point | Your route | Plan ahead |
|---|---|---|
| Melbourne or Geelong | Train to Geelong, then Route 56 towards Queenscliff. | Check the train and bus connection for both directions. |
| Sorrento | Searoad Ferries as a foot passenger. | Check sailings, check-in time and your return crossing. |
Train and bus via Geelong
Use V/Line to plan your train journey to Geelong Station. From there, Route 56 runs to Queenscliff via Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale. The McHarry’s Route 56 timetable includes weekday, Saturday and Sunday services and the route map.
Check which stop suits your first activity and compare the actual connection times before booking lunch or a tour. Leave a buffer between the bus and train on your return. Service frequency varies across the day, so choosing a departure in advance makes the rest of the visit much easier.
Ferry from Sorrento
You can travel with Searoad Ferries without a vehicle. The operator gives an approximate crossing time of 40–45 minutes and asks foot passengers to arrive 20 minutes before departure. Read the operator’s travel information and check the live timetable and travel alerts for your date.
Build time into both ends of the crossing. Your walk into town, a relaxed lunch and returning to the terminal all need their own space. Our Queenscliff–Sorrento ferry guide has more detail on planning a visit around the boat.
A day that stays close together
-
Arrive, orient yourself, find a coffee
If you arrive at the harbour, begin with a look at the boats before making your way to Hesse Street. If your bus stop is in town, start with a cafe and save the waterfront for later. Keep your return stop or terminal marked on your phone.
-
Choose one main stop
Explore the Historical Museum, browse the shops and galleries, or plan around a booked Fort Queenscliff tour. Choosing one centrepiece leaves time to enjoy the places between it and lunch.
-
Eat near your next destination
Pick a restaurant or casual lunch spot in town if you are still exploring Hesse Street. If you are heading back to the ferry, make the harbour your final food stop. This keeps you from retracing the same walk when the afternoon starts to slip away.
-
Leave a little room before the journey home
Keep the final stretch flexible: another browse, a warm drink or time by the water if conditions suit. Set a reminder for when you need to start walking back, including the ferry’s check-in window or time to find the correct bus stop.
Make the journey fit your group
- With children: split the walk into short sections and choose one main activity. Our family guide has more ideas.
- With a wheelchair or mobility aid: confirm the train, bus, ferry and venue access arrangements for your own requirements before booking.
- With a bicycle: Searoad directs cyclists through the vehicle ticket window for boarding. Check the operator’s boarding instructions and bike ticket options.
- Staying overnight: compare the actual walk from your arrival point to your accommodation, especially with luggage, and ask your host about check-in and storage.
- If rain arrives: bring the day back to the town centre with our rainy-day guide.
